One of the most exciting projects to be involved in is building an extension for your home - but to really reach your home's full potential it's important to understand what the different types of extensions are.

Here are some ideas for you to consider when it comes to planning your home transformation:

Single storey

An excellent idea if you want to open up your kitchen area and incorporate the outdoor space into your design. Good design will include lots of extra storage and utility areas

Double storey

Add significant value to your property and open up your home to additional rooms on other floors.

Loft conversion

If you have the space to do so, a loft conversion is a great solution to extra space, especially as they are more cost effective since they don’t require anywhere near as much structural work compared to other building projects. Being up in the eaves means you are removed from all the hustle and bustle of traffic noise and family distractions.

Glass box extension

Stylish, modern and practical, this type of extension will flood your home with natural light and you can 'bring the outdoors inside'.

First floor extension

For example, building over an existing garage or kitchen space will at least double the living area. Make sure you consult with an expert, as planning will be required for this type of construction.

Side return extension

Often, this is an under-used part of the garden that can become a dumping ground. A successful design can enlarge your kitchen/dining area, turning it into a family space and with the addition of roof windows can make the new space feel airy and modern.

Garden outbuilding

These are available ready to go and you can make this space whatever you want it to be. Writers and artists say they are more creative working amongst nature - and if you have the appropriate permissions- this could be a lucrative form of income by renting the space out.
